Steve Brupbacher, BSA Principal and Expert, shares insights into some of his favorite projects.
For over 25 years, Steve has had the pleasure of shaping spaces that inspire and elevate the human experience. As a licensed Architect and Austin native, he understands the power of collaboration and community in the heart of Texas.
Historic Preservation: Iconic Gymnasium Turned Robotic Lab
First, Steve reflects on the historic UT Austin Anna Hiss Gymnasium Renovation, which transformed a gym into a cutting-edge robotics lab. In this project, the team needed to balance preserving the historic character of the space with the high-tech needs of robotic research. Watch as Steve discusses the intricate details of one of BSA’s most iconic historic preservation projects.
Of course, there are challenges to every project… but more importantly, there are solutions. Watch to gain insights into the challenges and solutions to the Anna Hiss Gymnasium Renovation.

Strategic Demolition of Erwin Center
Beyond historic preservation, Steve brings yet another area of expertise to the BSA. With Steve’s guidance, BSA played a critical role in one of The University of Texas at Austin’s most ambitious recent projects: the design-build demolition of the iconic Frank Erwin Center. Below, Steve discusses key considerations when planning a large-scale demolition project. The careful dismantling of such a large and beloved facility, while maintaining critical infrastructure and minimizing disruption to campus life, reflects the type of multifaceted challenge that BSA is uniquely equipped to handle.
Managing Client Expectations
At the center of every project Steve leads is the client. He manages expectations throughout design and construction with a commitment to open, transparent communication. Steve ensures clients are involved at every stage, from concept through execution. Rather than just presenting solutions, Steve and his team engage clients in meaningful dialogue to shape solutions together.
By welcoming clients as active team members rather than just stakeholders, he fosters trust and creates a shared understanding of both opportunities and challenges along the way. Steve emphasizes that listening to and acting on client feedback is one of the most critical factors in a project’s success. When clients feel heard and informed, the result is a stronger partnership and a better outcome.
