Architecture and Engineering for a Next-Generation Bioscience Innovation Facility
The Indiana University Launch Accelerator for Biosciences (IU LAB) is a transformative bioscience research and innovation facility located within the 16 Tech Innovation District in Indianapolis, Indiana. Envisioned as a 150,000-square-foot incubator and research building, IU LAB is designed to accelerate human health innovation, support commercialization, and strengthen Indiana’s growing bioscience ecosystem.
BSA provided architecture and engineering services as part of the project team, partnering with SmithGroup, who served as Design Lead and Lab Planner, to help bring this highly collaborative research environment to life.
Supporting Bioscience Research, Innovation, and Collaboration
IU LAB was developed to create a flexible and adaptable environment that supports the full lifecycle of bioscience innovation—from education and training to research, entrepreneurship, and commercialization.
The facility is designed to:
- Accelerate innovation and discovery in human health by expanding the research continuum between Indiana University and the 16 Tech Innovation District
- Provide flexible workspace environments that can adapt to evolving research needs
- Create a collaborative hub connecting students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry partners
- Serve as an accessible resource for training, learning, and professional development
- Encourage collaboration across disciplines, research approaches, and events
Integrated Architecture and Engineering for Advanced Research Environments
Through BSA’s architecture and engineering expertise, the project team supported the development of a facility designed around collaboration, flexibility, and advanced bioscience research needs. The project incorporates spaces intended to support six innovation centers and nine research cores, along with flexible laboratory infrastructure and strategic utility planning.
The landmark facility brings together a diverse group of stakeholders, including research leaders, industry partners, and government representatives, requiring a highly coordinated design approach to support the project’s ambitious goals.
Advancing Indiana’s Bioscience Ecosystem
Funded in part by a transformative $138 million Lilly Endowment grant, IU LAB consolidates Indiana University’s bioscience research initiatives into a single, highly collaborative environment. The facility will provide a foundation for translational research, entrepreneurship, and industry partnerships while supporting continued growth within Indiana’s bioscience community.
