Rethinking Campus Environments: Designing for How People Learn and Perform

This session explores how campus environments can better support a wide range of cognitive and sensory needs through intentional planning and design strategies. Drawing from evidence-based research and a recently developed design framework, the presentation highlights how spatial organization, acoustics, lighting, and material choices influence focus, comfort, and user experience.

The session will also share preliminary findings from a survey conducted within a higher education facility, offering insight into how students and staff interact with and respond to their environments. Key strategies, including sensory zoning, spatial sequencing, and adaptable learning settings, will be discussed as practical tools to improve usability and performance. Attendees will gain actionable approaches to create responsive, flexible learning environments that align design decisions with user needs and operational outcomes.

Aligning Space with Service: Evidence-Based Planning for Clinics

This session presents a mixed-methods study examining the real-world performance of outpatient clinic environments and translating those findings into actionable design insights for healthcare planners and designers. The study evaluated four outpatient clinics within a single healthcare system using an integrated research approach that included behavior mapping, patient shadowing, Gemba walk-throughs, staff surveys, and open-ended staff feedback. Observational methods documented patient movement, waiting patterns, and staff–patient interactions across public and clinical spaces, while survey and qualitative data captured perceptions of privacy, comfort, efficiency, and satisfaction. Multivariate regression analysis identified the environmental features most strongly associated with patient experience, stress, and perceived efficiency of care delivery. Findings revealed consistent misalignment between design intent and actual use.
