Marion Health East: A Major Step Forward in Healthcare for Gas City, Indiana

This new standalone hospital in Gas City, Indiana represents a significant expansion of the footprint for Marion Health, enhancing healthcare accessibility for a currently under-served community. Marian Health East is a testament to Marion Health’s commitment to providing top-notch medical services to all members of the community, regardless of their location.

The vision for the hospital campus and its facilities is deeply reflective of the rich industrial heritage that characterizes the Grant County area. Healing elements of the natural world inspired the design. It also integrates these influences to create a harmonious environment. The facility’s architecture and interior design celebrate the coexistence of industry and life in all its forms. Furthermore, the design blends the robust industrial aesthetic with the calming presence of nature.

This hospital was developed as an easily accessible, patient-centered environment that incorporates advanced technology and offers a hospitality-like atmosphere. Every aspect of the process was carefully planned with the utmost convenience of patients, healthcare providers, and staff in mind. The goal was to create a space that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of all who use it. As a result, the space ensures a seamless and comfortable healthcare experience.

Project Overview

The facility features a new 4-story building encompassing 113,000 square feet. It is designed to serve as an acute-care hospital with a wide range of ambulatory services. This facility provides comprehensive orthopedic and spine services, including surgery, rehabilitation, and outpatient clinic care. Additionally, it houses:

  • Family practice and multi-specialty outpatient clinics
  • Emergency services complete with a helipad
  • Radiology and laboratory services
  • Inpatient acute care units

The design also includes the flexibility to accommodate future expansions, ensuring that the hospital can continue to grow and evolve to meet the community’s needs. We balanced energy and sustainability goals with the reality of a smaller maintenance staff available to operate complex systems. This approach helped us provide robust yet maintainable engineering solutions.

Key Features:

  • Hospital and outpatient occupancy separation, but master planned for full conversion to inpatient services
  • Capable of fully exhausting the emergency department in “pandemic” mode
  • Wind model study performed to strategically locate intake and effluent discharge locations
  • Equipment planning started from the ground up reviewing existing vendors, considering new vendors and reviewing numerous proposals from multiple vendors
  • Entire facility on backup power
