The image shows a modern office space with three side-by-side booth seating areas designed for focused individual work or small meetings. Each booth features gray upholstered bench seating arranged in a U-shape around white tables. Two of the booths are occupied by men working on tablets or laptops. What makes these booths visually striking is the colorful abstract artwork that covers the back wall of each alcove - featuring flowing, organic designs in blues, yellows, and multicolored tones. Each booth is illuminated by a single spherical pendant light hanging from the ceiling. The top of the image shows wooden slat detailing along the ceiling, and the floor features a geometric patterned carpet in gray with some lime green accents. The overall design creates semi-private workspaces that blend functionality with artistic elements, allowing for concentration while maintaining an open feel to the environment.
The image shows a modern open office environment with an interesting architectural design that balances privacy and openness. On the left side, there's a wall of frosted glass panels with a pattern of small dots, bordered by wooden panels. The ceiling features exposed pipes, conduits, and ductwork in some areas, with drop ceiling panels in others, creating a contemporary industrial aesthetic. The office space contains cubicle-style workstations with low dividers. Two people are visible working at their desks - a woman on the right side seated at her workstation and a person working at a desk with a bright yellow privacy divider behind them. A person in a blue shirt is walking through the hallway on the left side of the office. The floor has patterned carpeting with a subtle geometric design in beige and brown tones. The space appears bright and airy with natural light coming through windows visible in the background, and the overall design balances modern office functionality with aesthetic elements.Three people are working in the space - a bearded man sitting in a purple chair with a laptop, a woman with blonde hair also working on a laptop, and a man in glasses standing nearby. They're arranged around comfortable purple lounge chairs and a small round table in a casual meeting setup. The area has floor-to-ceiling windows along one wall providing views of autumn trees with orange and yellow foliage outside. On the right side, there's a decorative metal screen with a geometric pattern that provides partial privacy while maintaining an open feel. The ceiling features wooden slat details and pendant lighting fixtures. The overall design balances openness with privacy, creating an inviting space for informal meetings or collaborative work.

This view is of a meeting/presentation room with eight tables arranged neatly in two rows of four. Three people are sitting at the tables, which each have four ergonomic chairs, and watching a man deliver a presentation on a large flat screen TV. The entrance to the room is a dramatic wooden arch, but the walls are transparent glass. The floor has patterned carpeting with a subtle geometric design in beige and brown tones.
The image shows a modern laboratory or scientific workspace with multiple workstations arranged throughout a spacious room. Each station features black countertops mounted on white metal frames with adjustable height capabilities, complemented by black ergonomic chairs on wheels. The ceiling has a grid of fluorescent lighting panels and utility connections hanging down at various points. The room has light blue accent walls, frosted glass partitions on the left side, and appears to be designed for research or technical work with electrical outlets and equipment mounting points visible at each workstation. The space has a clean, organized appearance with neutral flooring and bright overhead lighting.

A New Home for Bioscience Discovery

The Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI) is dedicated to accelerating breakthrough discoveries in life sciences and tackling the world’s most complex disease processes. Guided by its mission, Discovery with Purpose, IBRI fuels innovation through strategic collaboration with industry, academia, and healthcare partners.

To advance this mission, BSA designed and engineered IBRI’s new headquarters and state-of-the-art research laboratories, strategically located in the 16 Tech Innovation District northwest of downtown Indianapolis. The facility’s modern exterior and dynamic interior reflect the cutting-edge science taking place within and embodies the spirit of discovery and innovation.

Collaborative Design Process

Every BSA project begins with a collaborative visioning process. For IBRI, our architects, engineers, and interior designers partnered closely with institute leaders and subject matter experts to identify:

  • Critical success factors for research operations
  • Pain points in previous facilities
  • Goals for flexibility, collaboration, and future growth

This inclusive process ensured the design aligned with IBRI’s long-term vision and operational needs.

Designing for Flexibility and Collaboration

A central theme of the project was creating an adaptable, collaborative environment for fast-paced bioscience research. Key design priorities included:

  • Flexible laboratories with modular layouts that can shift as research evolves
  • Integrated office, lab, and shared spaces to improve workflow and equipment access
  • Adaptable meeting and conference areas to support both formal and informal collaboration
  • Visual transparency and natural daylighting to foster openness and connection to the outdoors

These elements create a vibrant hub of innovation that supports researchers, partners, and collaborators while inviting the broader community into the life sciences ecosystem.

Future-Ready Laboratory Design

BSA’s design approach ensures IBRI can follow the science. Flexible lab infrastructure allows layouts and functions to evolve without disruptive renovations, enabling the institute to quickly adapt to new research priorities and technological advancements. This future-ready approach supports IBRI’s role as a leader in applied life sciences research.

Strategic Location in 16 Tech

The headquarters’ location in the 16 Tech Innovation District positions IBRI within a thriving ecosystem of research, entrepreneurship, and advanced industries. The space not only strengthens IBRI’s ability to attract top talent but also enhances collaboration with partners across biosciences, tech, and healthcare.

As Bob Coy, President and CEO of the 16 Tech Community Corporation, noted:

Building One will be home to researchers, entrepreneurs, and advanced industry leaders in tech, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, ag-bioscience, and talent development. These tenants represent the ideal cross-section of industry expertise and entrepreneurial energy that will drive innovation in Indiana’s economy.

A Hub for Innovation and Impact

With its modern design, advanced laboratory infrastructure, and strategic location, IBRI’s new headquarters empowers the institute to expand its mission of improving human health for all. The facility embodies the future of collaborative bioscience—an environment where discovery, innovation, and impact converge.
