The Innovation Wing at Purdue University is a 29,500-square-foot expansion of the Martin C. Jischke Hall of Biomedical Engineering, designed by BSA to advance research, instruction, and industry collaboration.
The Innovation Wing Addition
Originally built in 2006, Jischke Hall established a home for the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. Its design anticipated future growth, allowing for seamless expansion toward Purdue’s Discovery Park. That vision became reality with the addition of the Innovation Wing, a facility intentionally designed alongside the school’s first undergraduate biomedical engineering program.
A Hub for Biomedical Innovation
The Innovation Wing was developed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing program and to support Purdue’s 2017–2022 Strategic Plan. The building functions as a hub for:
- Collaborative applied research in emerging biomedical fields
- Technology innovation with flexible, future-ready labs
- Hands-on and online instruction for undergraduate and graduate students
- Corporate and healthcare partnerships that connect academia with industry impact
The design accommodates a threefold increase in faculty, adapts to the interdisciplinary and ever-changing nature of biomedical research, and positions the facility as a gateway to Discovery Park.
Specialized Facilities
The Innovation Wing includes:
- 18 teaching and research laboratories
- Optics labs, project labs, and microscope rooms
- Tissue culture labs and interaction spaces for student-faculty collaboration
These spaces were designed to strengthen Purdue’s leadership in biomedical engineering while encouraging innovation across disciplines.
Driving Growth and Partnerships
Purdue University is experiencing unprecedented growth, and the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering is expanding in scope and impact as a result. The Innovation Wing supports this growth by:
- Increasing interdisciplinary collaboration across campus
- Expanding partnerships with medical device and life science companies
- Driving regional economic growth and job creation through research and innovation
