Baycare Health System

St. Petersburg, Florida

143,000 SF

Project Overview

A new 143,000 SF, 90-bed patient tower expanded this hospital’s capacity for surgical, cardiac, and critical care services. BSA provided engineering services for both the new tower and the Central Energy Plant (CEP), delivering resilient systems that power the entire campus and ensure uninterrupted patient care.

Engineering Scope

BSA’s engineering design supported both the vertical expansion of the hospital and the infrastructure required to operate it efficiently:

Central Energy Plant (CEP)

  • 6 megawatts of continuous-rated generators
  • Two 25,000-gallon fuel tanks enabling 96 hours of runtime without refueling
  • New water-cooled centrifugal chiller and cooling tower added to the existing plant
  • SCADA monitoring and control systems for campus-wide reliability

Patient Tower

  • New air handlers, terminal units, ductwork distribution, and air devices for improved air circulation
  • Direct digital controls for energy-efficient building management
  • Complete plumbing systems for patient floor
  • Medical gas infrastructure to support surgical and inpatient care
  • Comprehensive fire protection systems throughout all new areas of the tower for safety
  • Low and medium-voltage power distribution for reliable energy
  • Interior and exterior lighting with considerations for visibility and comfort
  • Lightning and surge protection systems for protection against natural events
  • Finally, an uninterruptible power supply for critical systems to safeguard critical operations

Facility Highlights

The four-story vertical expansion, built on top of the existing three-story structure, added a variety of critical spaces, including three new surgical suites with pre-admission testing, non-invasive cardiology facilities, new classrooms and education areas, inpatient dialysis, and a cafeteria with a full kitchen.

Impact

As a result, through engineering innovation, BSA delivered resilient building systems that strengthen hospital operations, expand care capacity, and improve the patient and staff experience. The integrated CEP ensures that the hospital can maintain full operations during power disruptions while meeting the needs of a growing community.
